In a way, these jokes are even funnier to me because we’re not making them for anyone- just ourselves. I think that’s why I love Amir’s reply to a buried comment at the bottom of a Digg thread. Hopefully you can appreciate this the way I do- just imagine it was never really meant to be seen by anyone.

Also, this feels like a pretty good time to commend everyone who worked on the latest Hardly Working (which is why the Digg thread exists.)

Take a Hike

The last few months I’ve been trying to get outside as much as possible and this past weekend Jeff Rosenberg and I borrowed a car and drove out of the city to Bear Mountain. We got sandwiches from a deli on our way and ate on top of a rock looking out over the Hudson. Pretty great that all you need is a view to make a 5 dollar turkey sandwich the most delicious thing you’ve eaten all week.

Despite a great lunch on the way up, the summit of Bear Mountain was slightly disappointing- apparently there’s a paved road that runs to the top. When you spend 2 hours hunched over cold rocks and dirt you don’t want to reach the peak only to see a bus full of Asian tourists, infants in strollers and overweight people in motor scooters. Still, the view was amazing and my love for getting out of the city is unfazed.

One thing I resolved to do on this last hike was to try and be more patient and stay in the moment. I think one of my biggest flaws is my inability to be satisfied without looking forward to the next satisfying thing. I realized this as I was walking through the woods telling Jeff how “In the Spring, we should do this every weekend.” There is no need to look forward to the Spring when I’m hiking up a mountain on a beautiful Fall day, right? Right.

PS, I realized there’s an unforeseen bonus to all this hiking lately- having really sick pictures taken of yourself.

Dave “Sticks” Fishel - pictured above with Vinnie -...

Dave “Sticks” Fishel - pictured above with Vinnie - is the director behind some really nice looking Jake and Amir’s like “Bless You” and “Sleeping Pills.” He’s participating in a film contest and deserves your vote.

(Here’s my favorite, but you should watch them all.) It’s funny to think that our fans are actually more talented than Amir and I are. But the editors aren’t the only people who did something really cool for us, a dude named Stephen sent us this epic poster about a week into the contest.

So now we have everything except an actual movie. Two for three is pretty chill though.

This weekend a few of the guys from work and I went hiking. We took the Metro North train about an hour towards Poughkeepsie and got off in Cold Spring. I always love an opportunity to get out of the city and be somewhere where I can see real horizons, feel the sun on my face and pee against a tree. Typically, I break up the monotony of city living by going home to Connecticut. And while I can appreciate the escape of being in my own town, it sometimes feels like I’m leaving one routine for another.

It was really great going somewhere new.

Also, one little piece of advice. Kevin has a tradition for when he goes hiking: When he’s done, he eats ice cream. I highly recommend that this fall everyone hikes up a mountain and then drinks a chocolate milkshake.

I really like this video on CollegeHumor.

I really like this video on CollegeHumor.

willschneider:

Nothing is more comforting to me than a drive through my home town with some good music on. Being in the city so long and always sharing commuting space with so many people I sometimes forget how satisfying it is to just move. My car isn’t anything special, It’s a dark green Saab from 1996. But coming from a family of 8 it’s kind of the only thing that I can really consider mine.

The Saab has witnessed a lot of my life first hand. It’s seen break ups, it’s driven to weddings and funerals, it’s taken me across 9 states, it’s impeded makeout sessions by having a center console that is inconveniently large. It’s played an embarrassing amount of DMB songs.

The Saab has seen a lot of late drives on Friday nights when nothing is going on. If I were home, it’s safe to say it’d be seeing another one right now. Until then, this couch will have to do instead of a driver’s seat.

Cadbury Eggs

I’m currently the high bidder on eBay for a package of 48 Cadbury Creme Eggs. Despite being only a seasonal thing, Cadbury Creme Eggs are my all time favorite candy. I’m sick today and I don’t really like the thought of food, but I have an inexplicable desire to eat at least 9 or 10 Cadbury Eggs. Maybe I’m pregnant?

Either way, I spent some time looking for Cadbury Eggs, they’re sold out for the 2008 season in most places, and they’re also not yet on the shelves anywhere. Which is why I turned to eBay. I know I won’t be able to satisfy my urge today, but what’s really important for some reason is just knowing that they’re on their way. I really hope I win.

This is the best thing to have at 4 o’clock on a...

This is the best thing to have at 4 o’clock on a Tuesday.

I really like the way the new Hardly Working turned out.

I really like the way the new Hardly Working turned out.

"I think you should always ask yourself, “If I was 8, would I hesitate to do this?"

“I think you should always ask yourself, “If I was 8, would I hesitate to do this?””

-
Mike Karnell.

A few weeks ago I bet Kunal that the Yankees would make the post season. Each of us would grow facial hair for two weeks, and then the winner got to dictate how the loser shaved. The Yankees aren’t officially out, but I want to get this over with now.

Luckily, I don’t grow facial hair very thick, so it’s pretty subtle. Although it might be worse to have a creepy, wispy neck beard. Admittedly, I left my mustache pretty wide. But Kunal has already called me on it so I’m going to have to shave closer tonight. I wonder how Derek Jeter would feel if I told him about this.

Stolen Donut?

To save money on lunches this week I went shopping at The Food Emporium this morning, and to reward myself for being so frugal I thought I’d buy myself a donut. I used the self checkout and when it came time to scan my donut I pressed the button indicating the food had no barcode. I couldn’t find donuts anywhere on the menu. I went back and tried again. I looked all over the place. I took too long so the machine said “Please wait for an attendant.” Which I did. When I looked around and so no attendant in sight I cancelled the donut, paid for everything else, and left. But I stole the donut.

I thought about it on my walk to work, after all that I did trying to pay for the donut, I think I was entitled to having a free donut. I mean it was only 79 cents. Plus it wasn’t even that good. PLUS I gave half of it to Jeff Rosenberg. So anyway- if you’re reading my blog, God, just comment or whatever and I’ll go back and pay for it.
